Founded in 1953 by Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Peter D. Martin, City Lights Bookstore is one of the few great independent bookstores in the United States. The legacy of anti-authoritarian politics and insurgent thinking of the Beat generation continues to be a strong influence in the store.
