Suggestion From Ocala

Sometimes people sitting at a distance can see solutions to problems which those struggling with them can't recognize.

From the detachment of his editor's chair on the Ocala Star-Banner, the veteran Bert Dosh has offered Tallahassee a suggestion which might help compromise our bus dispute.

He says, since the Negroes won't ride segregated buses and the white people won't stand for totally integrated buses, we might try to run one of each kind.

That may be more practical than even the Ocala editor thinks.

Most of the trouble over the bus segregation in Tallahassee was on the line which ran between Florida A. and M. University and Frenchtown, the two principle Negro sections. This is the run which was most used. It was one of the few which ran on a 15-minute schedule. Most other ran every half-hour. Why wouldn't it be possible to have one carry a sign: "unrestricted seating," and next one a sign saying: "restricted seating."

Then, if a Negro insisted on sitting in an integrated bus he could wait half an hour like people on other routes. If a white man insisted on riding a segregated bus, he could wait half an hour. Those who didn't care cold ride every 15 minutes.

It's a suggestion that someone might like to make at the next meeting of the boycotters. We believe the bus company and the City officials would listen to such a proposal.
